Raised for a time such as this
Peter Gibbs' sister Fiona died in police custody in 1997. Peter and his father resolved not to incite a violent response, as had occurred ten years prior when there was another Aboriginal death in custody. Peter's grief and anger towards police led to alcohol abuse and suicidal thoughts. The turning point came when Peter accepted the forgiveness which Jesus offers. He realised he had a deeper purpose, which led to the establishment of the IPROWD program to recruit and train Indigenous Australians for the police force.
