Outside the worlds of academia, mathematics and theology, Dr. John Lennox may not be familiar to many worldwide. Yet, this humble Irish scholar should be on everyone’s reading or listening lists. Despite his brilliance and academic pedigree, the professor from Oxford manages to make his points about his Christian faith clear enough for anyone willing to listen. The producers of Against the Tide desire for the rest of the world’s population to discover the treasure trove of expertise that John Lennox has to offer humanity.
Even though he has been a participant in numerous debates, written countless books and participated in other projects that engage with life’s more significant questions, this project focuses on the man. Instead of other biblical scholars doing the interview, this documentary enlists veteran Hollywood actor and director Kevin Sorbo (God's Not Dead, Hercules). This might seem like an unlikely pairing until we are reminded of his character in the previously mentioned film, where he indirectly debated against the words of the Oxford professor. During this film series, Sorbo began to study Lennox’s teachings and was motivated to find out more about him.
For fans of the unassuming mathematician, this will be a familiar journey through his life and experiences. From his Irish family through to the now-famous debates between noted atheists Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins, we get to know the history of the man who continues to work against those who rail against the Christian faith. Sorbo interviews John about many topics from life, apologetics and academia while making it all accessible for audiences of all ages. Thankfully the actor never tries to prove his own theological prowess. He merely attempts to ask the questions that people want to know about the professor and his views by asking about many of the most profound considerations that have plagued mankind throughout history.
This autobiographical excursion then does more than focus on John Lennox. It becomes a travelogue through Christian history that would be of interest to those of a Christian heritage as well as the individuals who are beginning the faith journey. Not hiding from the arguments of contemporary atheism, but taking them on directly in a winsome and gracious manner. By showing the consequences of the atheistic worldview, he can show how the Bible's message provides a hope-filled alternative.
Against the Tide takes the viewer around the world to show the historical, philosophical and theological implications of the message of Jesus. John Lennox shows that Christians do not need to back down from the modern statements in the world today. He shows that science, history and the Bible can complement one another and point humanity towards a hopeful existence with God.
