Short Take: The phrase comes from the film industry, originally, and it means a short bit of recording or “something that only takes a short time,” especially if a longer version may be done later.

Short Take review: A short review of a film with potential discussion points

Summary: Throughout the past few decades there have been few individuals who have had as significant an impact on the music industry as that of Pharrell Williams. His story began in the projects in Virginia Beach and eventually found their way into the studios of some of the biggest artists of this generation. Despite his humble beginnings and how few people understood his unique vision when it came to modern beats, he eventually proved that through hard work and some well placed opportunities in his life that chasing your dreams are worth it. His talents have brought the world some of the greatest songs from Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg. Yet, his story is one that has a unique world perspective and needed something special to deliver his life story and what better way to show his inner vision than to tell his tale through the medium of LEGO.

Review: Piece by Piece will surprise viewers as it not only shares a fascinating vision of an artist who continues to reach into society and bring forth his musical expression. Pherrell’s story unpacks how he found his voice in the industry as he worked to share his particular vision of music. Initially, Morgan Neville’s (Won't You Be My Neighbor?) direction and the use of LEGO to tell this uncommon narrative takes some getting used to, but eventually, it makes sense. As the tale unfolds, Pherrell can share his story in a way that will cross generations and show his vision in music through the lens of colour and artists that uniquely complement his life. A LEGO movie that is for adults and fans of music. It is a documentary that should be seen by everyone who has a dream they want to share with the world, especially those in the music industry. Fans of the person who brought us ‘Happy’ and so many other songs that continue to touch our souls.

Reel Dialogue: Can you see the colour of music?

Pharrell proves that music is more than an audio expression of his life. He continues to show that he is an artist who constantly hears music in his heart and mind. His on-screen persona and influence on the industry is impossible to miss, as much of what he has to say can only be expressed through song. Fascinatingly, his immersive vision is a blessing that has permeated modern culture and will resonate throughout history. The producer and artist shows how he is an influential force that has touched every side of life and those around him as he continues to release his music as a musician and producer.

‘But let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.’ 1 Peter 3:4

One of the greatest struggles throughout our lives is finding the right thing to say in any situation. What most people forget is that sometimes less is more. Words have value, but many times, actions do ‘speak louder than words.’ If your words fail you when trying to serve others, it can be worthwhile to find other means of serving those around you. Words and actions can be a winning combination. Yet, using your God-given gifts can have a positive ripple effect on you and your community.

‘But be doers of the word, and not hearers only…’ James 1:22
