Lifegroup uncovered – reflections from a participant

What is a Lifegroup? Caroline Spencer interviews a Lifegroup participant to find out more

A little over a month ago, City Bible Forum had former supermodel Tracy Trinita visit Australia where she shared her story and was interviewed by Jane Hutcheon. Since then we have posted a series of articles reflecting on some of the issues that she raised. We reflected on the goodness of success and achievement as well as their inability to provide a solid foundation for life. We also reflected on where our self worth comes from and we’ve reflected on the fact that we are more than just the sum of the skills we can bring to the market place or our experiences. This week we’re doing something a little bit different. We’re doing an interview of our own.

One thing this series of articles has tried to encourage is to get you to start asking the bigger questions. One step that would provide an opportunity for you to do this yourself would be to join a Lifegroup. A Lifegroup is a small gathering of people who are interested in talking about the bigger questions in life. This week we are interviewing E. Caroline Spencer, who works for City Bible Forum, recently sat down with E to discuss her experience of being part of a Lifegroup that she joined towards the end of last year:

CS: What do you spend most of the week doing?

E: I work as a lawyer in a community legal centre and spend time with my partner, friends and family

CS: What else do you enjoy doing?

E: I love being active and dancing is my favourite activity!

CS: How would you describe your faith position?

E: I wouldn't call myself a Christian but I love discussing big questions about values, morality and why we are all here.

CS: Why did you give Lifegroup a try?

E: Because I trusted the ladies who asked to meet with me and knew that they would stimulate my thinking about big questions.

CS: What concerns did you have before you started?

E: That it may also be about converting me to be a Christian - but that isn't the case at all!

CS: What do you like about Lifegroup?

E: That I leave feeling like my brain has been stretched in ways it doesn't get to be at work and because I really enjoy the company of the ladies who I attend Lifegroup with.

CS: How has your thinking has changed thanks to the discussion in Lifegroup?

E: Not sure if my thinking has changed as a whole but I believe that my thoughts on what the Bible can teach has changed in that I think it can explore life's big issues in interesting ways and that there is no better way to do that than speak with interesting people about their thoughts too.

CS: Who would you recommend Lifegroup to?

E: any person who is open to having their beliefs and assumptions explored and who wants to meet interesting people who care about the big questions in life.
