The German Porn Law Firm

I recently read an article about a German law firm proposing to publish names of people accused of downloading legal porn but not paying for it. It's well worth a read.

The firm has been sending letters since 2006 to individuals whose computers have been identified as having downloaded pornography but not paying for it. They give people the chance to pay a one off fee (650 euros) to compensate the copywrite holder. It seems however most people aren't getting the mail or it's being ignored, so they're now planning to publish these people's names.

This article got me thinking about the motivations behind why this law firms actions might work and believe it or not, the day Jesus returns.

No-one likes others to know what they do wrong. We spend our whole lives trying to cover or beat our failings. The Bible says however that God knows everything about us, the good, the bad and the ugly. It also says that there is a day coming when God will call people to account for all the wrong that has happened in this world. He won't just be calling to justice those who caused massacres or large scale atrocities. He'll also judge those who've lied, cheated and gossiped as well. Like the German Law firm, the Bible says that God has a written record of everything we've done and on the day Jesus returns it will all be laid out for all to see (e.g. Hebrews 4:13; Revelation 20:11-15).

For many of us we'll be glad for justice. But for all of us we know we have skeletons in the closet that we don't want to get out, let alone be held to account for. Romans 3 has this warning and encouragement for us:

Maybe the motivation that we can't hide our failings forever is a good reason to investigate Jesus.
