Summary: Wednesday Addams (Chloë Grace Moretz) begins to believe that she is not a blood relative of her family. As she begins to consider these familial implications, Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and Morticia (Charlize Theron) decide to take the family on a road trip to distract from their daughter’s considerations. While the Addams family travels from Niagara Falls to the Grand Canyon, they are chased by a lawyer for scientist Cyrus Strange (Bill Hader), who believes that Wednesday is his long-lost child. All the while, Uncle Fester (Nick Kroll) is experiencing the side effects of a gradual transmutation caused by his niece's latest science experiment.
Short Take Review: The Addams Family must fill a need for all parents who like a bit of macabre added to their animation. This seems to be the antidote to the whimsical worlds of Disney and Pixar. Severed heads, the living dead and loads of over-the-top explosions make their way into the storyline. One that is familiar and usually best left to be released on Nickelodeon. Still, this dark chapter in the lives of Gomez and Morticia’s bizarre family life makes it to the big screen again. Despite the outstanding cast and some noteworthy animation, this road trip is relatively pedestrian and forgettable.
REEL DIALOGUE: We are family
Family: For some, it will bring a smile to their lips and for others, it will cause tears to well up in their eyes. The Addams Family 2 does bring out the darker side of family life. Yet, it does it’s best to show high regard for this familial connection. It is a bittersweet gift that is given to us by God. Regardless of your personal reality with your family, have you taken the time to show your parents, children and extended family the appreciation they need today?
